What the masseter muscle does
You use the masseter every time you chew. In some people it is especially strong or overworked, often from clenching during the day or grinding at night. A large masseter can make the lower face look wider at the angle of the jaw. When a neuromodulator relaxes the muscle, it works less hard, and over time it can become less bulky. That is the basic idea behind both reasons people ask about this treatment.
Why people ask about it
- Clenching and grinding. People who clench or grind often describe jaw tension, tired chewing muscles or tension headaches. Some ask whether relaxing the muscle could ease that. A provider, sometimes together with a dentist, decides whether it is appropriate.
- Facial slimming. A strong masseter can give a square jawline. As the muscle relaxes and gets smaller, many people describe a softer, more tapered lower face.
- Both at once. Many people have some of each, which is why the question comes up so often.
Masseter treatment is an off-label use of neuromodulators in the United States. Off-label use is common in aesthetic medicine, and it is something to discuss openly with a licensed provider.
What happens at the appointment
A visit usually starts with a consultation. The provider asks about clenching, grinding, chewing habits, dental work and your medical history, and feels the muscle while you clench and relax. If treatment is appropriate, the skin is cleaned and a few small injections are placed into the muscle on each side. The injections themselves usually take only a few minutes. The plan, including how much product is used, is decided by the provider for your anatomy. We do not publish doses, and there is no standard amount that fits everyone.
What people notice over the following weeks
Masseter results are slower than results in the forehead. People commonly describe a sequence like this, although timing varies.
- First days. Little visible change. Some people notice mild tenderness at the injection points.
- First one to two weeks. Many people notice that clenching feels weaker and chewing tough foods takes a little more effort.
- Several weeks in. As the muscle is used less, it can become smaller. Changes in the shape of the lower face, if they happen, are usually gradual and often take a month or more to become noticeable.
- Months later. The muscle slowly regains strength. For many people the effect lasts longer than in the upper face, often several months, but it varies. Read more in how long does Botox last.
Side effects people ask about
Like any injectable, masseter treatment can cause tenderness, bruising or swelling at the injection points. Some people notice chewing fatigue for a while. Less commonly, product can affect nearby muscles involved in smiling, which can make a smile look uneven until it wears off. This is one reason experience and careful placement matter. Discuss risks with your provider before treatment, and contact the clinic if anything worries you afterward.
Choosing a provider for masseter treatment
The jaw is an area where anatomy matters. Look for a licensed provider who treats the masseter regularly and can explain how they map the muscle. A good provider will also tell you plainly if they think your concern is better addressed another way, for example through a dentist for grinding, or if a square jaw comes mostly from bone rather than muscle, which a neuromodulator cannot change.
Reasons a provider may say no or ask you to wait
A provider may decline or delay treatment during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active skin infection in the area, with certain medications, or with certain neuromuscular conditions. Ask a licensed provider.
Questions to ask your provider
- Do you think my jaw width comes from muscle or bone?
- How often do you treat the masseter, and how do you plan placement?
- Could this help my clenching, or should I also see a dentist?
- How long until I might notice a change, and how long does it usually last?
- What side effects do you see most often with this area?
- How do you quote price for masseter treatment?
What it costs
Price varies by clinic, ask for a quote. Masseter plans often use more product than a small area of the face, so quotes depend on the plan your provider makes, their training and your city. Our page on Botox cost explains what drives price.
